From July 20 to July 27, 18 high school students spent a week living as college students on the Bard College campus as part of Dream To Achieve’s first ever Summer Academy. These students, who came from under-resourced backgrounds from Hudson and surrounding areas, were chosen for the high levels of potential and motivation they have shown as students and leaders. The program was staffed by seven Bard graduates and current students.
Throughout the week, students took four classes each day: College 101, Hip-Hop, Poetry, & Literature, Music & Revolution, and Prejudice in Science. They had a final presentation in each class that they worked on each night in study hall with help from their teachers.
The rest of their schedule was filled with workshops that helped educate the participants on the college process, meetings with incoming Bard freshmen, activities focused on personal development, and local field trips that were both fun and informative. In addition, each student was given the opportunity to explore the college campus and all it has to offer freely throughout the week.
Students feedback from the week and was incredibly positive, as many considered it a “life-changing” experience that was highly motivational and informative for them as they pursue future opportunities.
DTA will work with with these students over the course of the year through its After School Mentoring Program and newly formed College Bound program, which will help provide college counseling services and encouragement in the Hudson City School District, in partnership with Hudson Promise Neighborhoods. DTA is excited to assist this amazing group of students moving forward as they continue to accomplish great things.
